Palm Leaf Mats

Palm Leaf Mats for Hotels, Resorts, Homestays and Yoga Centres: A Bulk Buying Guide

Key takeaways
  • Handwoven palm leaf mats (panai olai paai) suit floor seating, guest rooms, dining in a row, and yoga or meditation halls where a natural, traditional look matters.
  • Two standard sizes cover most needs: about 6×3 ft for lying or group seating, and about 4×2 ft for one person.
  • Mats last longest when kept dry, rolled when not in use, and kept away from footwear and rain.
  • Minimum order is 50 mats (two bundles of 25); stock orders are usually ready in about 3 business days.
  • We sell ex-godown: you arrange the vehicle, we pack and load free at MPK Valasai.

If you run a resort, a beach homestay, a heritage hotel or a yoga centre, a palm leaf mat for resorts and retreats is one of the simplest ways to make a space feel natural and local. Guests notice it the moment they sit on the floor of a verandah or walk into a meditation hall. But buying natural floor mats in bulk is different from buying one mat at a handicraft fair. You need the right sizes, a plan for care and replacement, and a reliable source.

We are Ramnad Agro, a family wholesale business in MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram, started in 1998 by my father, Mr. Chokkalingam. We collect handwoven palm leaf mats from weaving families around our village and pack them for buyers across South India. This guide is written for hospitality and wellness buyers who want to order once, order correctly, and reorder without surprises.

Why hotels, resorts and yoga centres choose palm leaf mats

Palm leaf mats are woven by hand from strips of sun-dried palmyra leaf. There is no plastic and no chemical dye. That matters to properties that sell a natural or eco experience, because the mat itself tells the story. A few practical reasons buyers give us:

  • Look and feel. The natural straw colour fits wooden floors, red oxide floors, laterite walls and thatched roofs.
  • Light and easy to move. A 6×3 ft mat weighs only about 1.2–1.8 kg, so staff can roll it, carry it and store it quickly.
  • Local and traditional. Palmyra is the state tree of Tamil Nadu, and palm leaf mats have been part of South Indian homes for generations. Many guests recognise the mat from their grandparents’ houses.
  • No plastic left behind. When a mat is finally worn out, it is plant material, not synthetic waste.

Sizes and where to use them

Our wholesale palm leaf mats come in two standard sizes, plus custom sizes on request for bulk orders. Sizes are approximate because each mat is handwoven.

Guest rooms and homestays

Many homestays keep one 6×3 ft mat per room as an extra seating or resting spot, rolled and tied in a corner. Some properties place them on a verandah or balcony. Keep them away from the bathroom door and from any spot where wet feet will land.

Dining and events

Traditional South Indian meals served in a row on the floor, with banana leaves, are popular at heritage resorts and during festivals. The 4×2 ft size works well here because guests sit cross-legged, one per mat, and the mats can be stacked away after the meal. Spills should be wiped and the mat dried before rolling.

Yoga, meditation and chanting halls

A palm leaf yoga mat is a traditional choice for seated practice: meditation, breathing practice, chanting and satsang. It is thin, firm and has a natural texture. It does not cushion like a foam or rubber yoga mat, so many centres use palm leaf mats for seated sessions and keep cushioned mats for floor exercises. We do not make any health claims for our mats; we recommend you order a sample and let your teachers try it before you buy in bulk.

How many mats should you order?

A simple way to plan quantity is to count spaces, not rooms. Walk through the property and list every place a mat will be used, then add a reserve.

  1. Count the active spots. For example, one mat per guest room, the number of seats in your dining row, and the number of people in your largest yoga or meditation session.
  2. Add a rotation reserve. Mats rest better when you can swap a used mat for a dry one. Many buyers keep a set of spares so mats can be aired in turns.
  3. Round to bundles. We pack in bundles of 25, and the minimum is 50 mats. Ordering in full bundles keeps packing tight for the journey.
  4. Plan the next order early. Stock orders of 50–300 mats are usually ready for pickup in about 3 business days. Larger orders are made on a booked schedule, so give more notice for big openings or the season start.

Care: keeping natural mats looking good

Palm leaf is a natural plant material. It handles everyday sitting and lying well, but it does not like water, damp floors or constant footwear. Housekeeping teams can follow a short routine.

  • Keep it dry. Wipe spills straight away with a dry or lightly damp cloth, then let the mat dry fully in shade or mild sun before rolling.
  • No footwear. Ask guests to remove shoes before stepping on mats. Grit from soles wears the weave.
  • Roll, don’t fold. Folding along the same line again and again cracks the leaf strips. Rolling is gentler.
  • Air it. Give mats a few hours of air and soft sunlight from time to time, especially after humid weeks.
  • Store off the floor. Keep spare mats rolled on a shelf or rack in a dry, ventilated room, never directly on a damp floor.
  • Turn and rotate. Swap mats between busy and quiet spots so wear is even.

Coastal and hill properties face extra humidity, especially in the monsoon. Our article on how to store palm leaf mats, brooms and rope without mould covers storage in more detail.

Replacement cycle: plan it, don’t guess it

We cannot give a fixed life for a mat, because it depends entirely on how it is used. A mat rolled out once a week in a dry meditation hall will last far longer than a mat on a busy verandah near the beach. Instead of guessing, set up a simple check.

Sign to checkWhat it meansAction
Loose or broken strips at the edgeEdge wear from rolling or foot trafficMove the mat to a low-use spot; replace in the next batch
Strips cracking in the middleHeavy use or repeated foldingReplace soon; check that staff are rolling, not folding
Dark spots or a musty smellDamp storage or spills not driedRemove from guest areas; air and dry; fix the storage spot
Even colour fadingNormal ageing in sunNo action needed unless appearance matters for the space

Most properties find it easiest to inspect mats at the end of each season and reorder a batch before the next one begins. Buying in batches also keeps the look consistent, since mats from the same lot tend to match more closely.

What to expect from a handmade natural mat

Every mat is woven by hand from natural leaf, so small differences in colour, thickness and edge finish between mats are normal. We check each mat for an even weave, firmly folded edges, full dryness and correct size before bundling. If you need a very uniform look in a single room, tell us in your enquiry and we will try to pick closely matched mats for that set. The full specification, packing and payment terms are on our palm leaf mats product page.

To understand how price is worked out for different sizes and quantities, read our palm leaf mat price and sizes guide. We do not publish a fixed price list because the rate depends on size, weave, quantity and season.

How to order palm leaf mats in bulk from Ramnad Agro

  1. Send your enquiry. Use the quote form or WhatsApp with sizes, quantity and the date you need them.
  2. Get a sample if needed. One mat can be couriered at cost so you can check the weave and feel.
  3. Confirm and pay 50% advance. This books your order. Stock orders are usually ready in about 3 business days.
  4. Book your pickup. Arrange a vehicle or a transport company and book a loading slot on our pickup booking form.
  5. Pay the balance and load. When your vehicle reaches the godown, pay the balance, and our team packs and loads the bundles free.

Mats are light but bulky, so for a resort order the vehicle runs out of space before it runs out of weight. Fifty 6×3 ft mats weigh only about 60–90 kg. A small pickup is often enough for a first order. If you are arranging transport from another state for the first time, our guide on arranging transport from a Tamil Nadu village supplier explains your options, and the Delivery & Pickup page has our address, loading hours and directions.

Many resorts also stock a few coconut leaf brooms for sweeping verandahs and paths. You can add them to the same pickup.

Frequently asked questions

Which palm leaf mat size is best for a resort or homestay?

The 6×3 ft mat suits guest rooms, verandahs and floor seating where people sit or lie down. The 4×2 ft mat suits individual seating, dining in a row (pandhi style) and personal yoga or meditation spots. Most properties order a mix of both.

Can palm leaf mats be used as yoga mats?

Many yoga and meditation centres use plain palm leaf mats for seated practice, chanting and meditation, in the traditional way. A palm leaf mat is thin and has a natural texture, so it does not cushion like a foam mat. Try a sample with your teachers before ordering in bulk. We make no health claims for the mats.

How long does a palm leaf mat last in a hotel?

It depends on how often it is used, whether it is walked on with footwear, and how dry it is kept. Mats kept dry, rolled when not in use and turned regularly last much longer than mats left on damp floors or in rain. Plan to inspect mats regularly and replace them in batches.

What is the minimum order for a resort?

The minimum is 50 mats, which is two bundles of 25. You can mix 6×3 ft and 4×2 ft sizes within the order. A single-mat sample can be couriered first, at cost.

Do you deliver to resorts in Kerala, Goa or the hills?

No. We sell ex-godown only. You book a lorry, mini-truck or transport company to collect from our godown in MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram, and we pack and load the mats free. The Delivery & Pickup page explains the steps.

Can you make custom sizes for a dining hall or a long verandah?

Custom sizes such as larger family mats or long runners can be made for bulk orders on request. Send the size and quantity with your enquiry and we will tell you what is possible and when it can be ready.
