Ask five sellers for a palm leaf mat price and you may get five very different answers. That is not always a sign of overcharging. A handwoven panai olai paai (பனை ஓலை பாய்) can differ in size, weave, edge finish and delivery terms, and each changes the rate. This guide explains what you are actually paying for, so you can compare quotes fairly and buy in bulk with confidence.
We are Ramnad Agro, a family wholesaler in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. We collect handwoven mats from weaving families around MPK Valasai and supply them in bundles to shops, distributors and bulk buyers. We do not publish fixed prices, because leaf supply and freight change, but we can show you how the price is built.
Common palm leaf mat sizes
Size is the biggest single factor in palm leaf mat price, because it decides how much leaf and weaving time goes into each mat. A 6×3 ft mat uses roughly twice the leaf of a 4×2 ft mat.
| Size | Typical use | Approx. weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| approx. 6 × 3 ft | Palm leaf sleeping mat, single | about 1.2–1.8 kg | Our most ordered size |
| approx. 4 × 2 ft | Sitting, pooja, temples, dining, yoga | Lighter than the sleeping size | Popular with pooja shops |
| Custom | Family sizes, runners | Depends on size | On request, with quantity |

Why handmade sizes vary slightly
Every mat is woven by hand from natural leaf strips, so “6×3 ft” means approximately that size. Small differences in length, colour, thickness and edge finish between mats are normal. Ask any supplier to measure a sample and confirm the tolerance before a large order, and tell your own customers that slight variation is a mark of handmade work.
Weave quality: how to judge it
Weave is the second big factor. A tight, even weave uses more leaf and more time, lasts longer and looks better on a shop floor. A loose weave is quicker to make, so it is cheaper, but it can open up with use.
- Even pattern: strips should cross evenly with no gaps you can see light through.
- No loose or broken strips: run your hand over the mat; nothing should catch or stick out.
- Firm edges: edges should be folded and firmly finished. Our mats have folded, double-woven edges, which is where cheap mats usually fail first.
- Fully dry: no damp smell and no dark mould spots.
- Flat lie: the mat should unroll and lie reasonably flat.
Plain natural vs coloured mats
You will see coloured palm mats in the market as well as plain ones. Colour adds a dyeing step, which affects cost, and buyers increasingly ask what dye was used.
Our mats are plain and natural: sun-dried palmyra leaf with no plastic, no bleach and no chemical dyes. The colour is the leaf’s own and varies a little from mat to mat. For buyers who sell on the “natural” promise, such as eco stores, yoga centres and resorts, this is the simpler product to explain.
What changes a bulk palm leaf mat price
When we quote palm leaf mat wholesale rates, these are the factors that move the number:
- Size: 6×3 ft costs more than 4×2 ft because it uses about twice the leaf.
- Weave tightness and edge finish: more leaf and more labour for a better mat.
- Order quantity: larger orders get a better per-mat rate.
- Season: leaf supply and weaving pace change through the year.
- Freight: parcel service versus lorry, and the distance to your city.
A quote that leaves out freight can look cheaper than one that includes it. Always compare the landed cost, which is the price per mat after freight and handling reach your door.
Buying online vs buying wholesale
If you search “palm leaf mat buy online”, many results are decorative placemats or synthetic palm-print rugs, not sleeping mats. Read listings carefully for material, size and weight. Retail prices online also include the seller’s packing, courier and margin for a single piece.
Buying by the bundle from a source wholesaler cuts out those per-piece costs. With us, the minimum order is 50 mats (two bundles of 25), and you can mix 6×3 ft and 4×2 ft sizes in one order.
Packing and dispatch
Mats are compressed into bundles of 25 and wrapped in gunny or hessian against dust, rubbing and damp. Stock orders of 50–300 mats leave our godown in about 3 business days; larger orders follow a booked schedule. We send by parcel service or lorry to any city in India, most often in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
Payment is 50% advance to book and the balance before dispatch, against the transport receipt (bilty / LR).
Reseller margins: plan before you buy
We cannot tell you what margin to take; that depends on your market. What we suggest is to work out your landed cost per mat first, then set your selling price. Our guide on starting a broom and mat reselling business has a worked example.
Two things protect your margin with mats:
- Storage: keep bundles in a dry, ventilated place, off the floor. Damp storage causes mould, and a mouldy mat cannot be sold.
- Sampling: order one sample mat by courier first, check weave and size, and show it to your own buyers.
