Coconut Wholesale Price in Tamil Nadu: What Decides the Rate and How to Buy Well

Key takeaways
  • The coconut wholesale price depends on grade (nut weight), husked or semi-husked form, bagged or loose packing, season and the day's market mood.
  • Per-piece and per-kg quotes cannot be compared until you convert one into the other using the nut weight.
  • Supply is highest from February to July; buyers watch big markets such as Pollachi and Kangeyam to read the direction of rates.
  • An ex-godown price covers goods packed and loaded on your vehicle. Freight is yours, so always compare landed cost.
  • Ask every supplier the same five questions and you can compare quotes like-for-like.

Every coconut buyer asks the same question first: what is the coconut wholesale price today? It is a fair question, but the honest answer is that there is no single rate. Two traders in the same town can quote very different numbers on the same morning and both be fair, because they are pricing different nuts, a different form, a different packing or a different point of delivery. This guide explains what actually decides the rate in Tamil Nadu, and how a business buyer can compare quotes and buy well.

We run Ramnad Agro, a family wholesale business in MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram district, started by my father Mr. Chokkalingam in 1998. We sell mature coconuts by the tonne to oil mills, copra yards, traders, hotels and shops. We do not print prices in articles, because the coconut rate moves too often for any printed figure to stay correct. What we can give you is the method.

Per piece vs per kg: two ways to quote the same coconut

In Tamil Nadu you will hear coconuts priced in two ways. Small shops, tender-coconut sellers and many retail buyers think per piece (or per hundred nuts). Oil mills, copra yards and lorry-load traders think per kg, because weight is what they pay for and what a weighbridge can prove.

Neither is wrong. The problem starts when a buyer puts a per-piece quote next to a per-kg quote and tries to pick the cheaper one. You cannot compare them until you know the average nut weight. A big 600 g nut and a small 400 g nut can carry the same per-piece price in one market and very different per-kg prices.

How to convert one into the other

  • Per-kg rate = per-piece rate ÷ average nut weight in kg.
  • Per-piece rate = per-kg rate × average nut weight in kg.
  • Nuts per kg = 1 ÷ average nut weight in kg. For example, 1 ÷ 0.5 = 2 nuts per kg.

Get the average nut weight by weighing a sample bag and counting the nuts in it. Do this once at loading and you will know exactly what you paid per nut. Our separate guide on how many coconuts are in 1 kg, 1 tonne and a lorry load has full worked tables.

The five things that decide the coconut rate

1. Grade and nut weight

Grade is mostly about size and maturity. At Ramnad Agro we sort into two main grades: Grade A, roughly 500 g and above, for traders, retail and cooking use; and Grade B (milling), roughly 400 to 500 g, for oil mills and copra drying. Bigger, uniform nuts sell for more per piece because retail customers pick them first. Mills care more about kernel thickness and maturity than looks, which is why a milling grade exists. Read our guide to wholesale coconut grades for oil mills for more detail.

2. Husked or semi-husked

A fully husked nut has all the fibre removed. A semi-husked nut (kudumi thengai) keeps a tuft of husk over the eyes to protect the shell on long trips. The extra husk adds weight per nut and some labour, so per-kg and per-piece rates differ between the two forms. For journeys longer than about two days, semi-husked is usually worth it. Our article on husked vs semi-husked coconut explains the trade-off.

3. Bagged or loose

Coconuts can travel in 50 kg gunny bags or loose in the lorry body. Bags cost money and take labour to fill and stitch, but make counting, unloading and resale easier. Loose loading suits mills that tip the whole load into their yard. A quote should say which one it is.

4. Season

Coconuts are available all year, but in our area most supply comes from February to July. When groves are harvesting heavily, more nuts reach the market. In leaner months, and around festivals when demand rises, the rate tends to firm up. Season also affects maturity and nut size, so the same grade name can mean slightly different nuts in different months.

5. The market mood that day

Coconut is a traded commodity. Rates react to what oil mills are paying, how much copra is moving and what large markets are doing. That is why a quote is usually valid only for a short time.

Which markets do traders watch?

Most serious buyers keep an eye on a few big coconut and copra centres in western Tamil Nadu, such as Pollachi and Kangeyam. These are places where large volumes of nuts, copra and coconut oil change hands, so their mood tends to signal which way rates are heading for the week. Traders follow them through local news, trader WhatsApp groups and phone calls to contacts.

Use these markets as a direction signal, not as a price list. A rate heard from Pollachi applies to nuts sold there, in that form and grade, at that point. Your own landed cost will be different because the nuts, the packing and the freight are different. When people search for "coconut rate today" or "thengai vilai indru", what they usually find is one of these market reports. They are useful, but only if you adjust for the details below.

What an ex-godown price means

An ex-godown price is the rate for goods at the supplier's godown, packed and loaded onto your vehicle. After that, the transport is yours. At Ramnad Agro every coconut quote is ex-godown, MPK Valasai, because we work on a pickup-only model:

  • You arrange your own lorry, mini-truck or transport company and pay freight directly to them.
  • We pack and load free at our godown, 6 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week.
  • You pay 50% advance to book, and the balance before loading when your vehicle arrives.
  • Every coconut lorry is weighed on an electronic weighbridge and the slip is handed to your driver.

The full terms are on our Delivery & Pickup page. When you are ready, you can book your pickup slot here.

The point is simple: an ex-godown rate and a "delivered to your yard" rate are two different things. If one supplier quotes delivered and another quotes ex-godown, add your freight to the ex-godown quote before you compare.

How to compare quotes like-for-like

Ask every supplier the same questions and write the answers in one sheet. Then the comparison becomes fair.

  1. Grade: what is the approximate nut weight range? Is the lot sorted or mixed?
  2. Form: fully husked or semi-husked?
  3. Packing: 50 kg bags or loose? Is the bag weight deducted?
  4. Basis: per piece, per hundred, per kg or per tonne?
  5. Point: ex-godown (where?) or delivered (to where)?

This is an illustration of the questions, not a comparison of real suppliers. Once you fill it in, work out the landed cost per usable kg: goods plus freight plus any unloading charges, divided by the weight you can actually sell or mill after removing rejects.

Common mistakes buyers make on price

  • Chasing the lowest per-piece rate. Small nuts look cheap per piece and cost more per kg of kernel.
  • Ignoring freight. A low ex-godown rate from far away can land costlier than a slightly higher rate nearby.
  • Not checking maturity. Immature nuts give thin kernel and poor oil. Shake a few: a mature nut sounds full of water and has no cracks.
  • Holding a quote too long. Coconut rates move. If you confirm days later, ask for a fresh quote.
  • Skipping the weighbridge. Without empty and loaded weights on a slip, any disagreement becomes your word against theirs.

How to buy well, season after season

Good coconut buyers are not the ones who guess the rate best. They are the ones who buy the right grade for their use, compare landed cost honestly and build a supplier relationship they can trust. A few habits help:

  • Match the grade to the buyer. Mills rarely need Grade A size; retail shops rarely want milling nuts.
  • Plan larger buying in the February to July supply window if you have storage and cash.
  • Send your own vehicle with a driver you trust, and ask him to bring back the weighbridge slip.
  • Check the first load carefully: count a sample bag, weigh it, and break a few nuts to see the kernel.
  • Keep a simple record of rate, grade, weight and rejects per load. After a few loads you will know your true cost per usable kg.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the coconut wholesale price change so often?

Supply from groves rises and falls with the season, and demand from oil mills, copra yards and festivals shifts week to week. Traders also follow the rates in big markets, so a move there spreads quickly to other buyers.

Is coconut sold per piece or per kg in Tamil Nadu?

Both. Shops and small buyers often deal per piece or per hundred nuts. Bulk trade, oil mills and lorry loads usually deal per kg, checked on a weighbridge. Always confirm which basis a quote uses.

Which months have the most coconut supply?

In our area most supply comes from February to July. Nuts are available all year, but the volume on offer is highest in those months.

What does an ex-godown coconut price mean?

It is the price for nuts packed and loaded onto your vehicle at the supplier's godown. Freight, tolls and unloading at your end are not included; you arrange and pay for transport yourself.

Does Ramnad Agro publish a fixed coconut price list?

No. The coconut rate changes too often for a fixed list. Send your grade, form, quantity and pickup date through the quote form and we reply with the current ex-godown rate.

What is the minimum order at Ramnad Agro?

1,000 kg of mature coconuts, husked or semi-husked, in 50 kg gunny bags or loose. You arrange the vehicle; we pack and load free at our godown in MPK Valasai.
