- Tamil Nadu is a major coconut-producing state, and many traders in neighbouring states buy from suppliers here.
- For trips longer than about two days, semi-husked (kudumi) nuts protect the shell better.
- Ramnad Agro is pickup-only: you arrange the lorry or transport company and pay freight; we load free.
- Keep the invoice, weighbridge slip and lorry receipt together, and check e-way bill rules with your accountant.
- Pay 50% to book and the balance before loading, after you or your driver have checked the lot.
If you trade coconuts in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh or further north, you have probably bought from coconut suppliers in Tamil Nadu at some point, or thought about it. The reason is supply. India is the world's largest coconut producer, with over 20,301 million nuts from about 2.19 million hectares in 2024-25, and a 2026 government factsheet names Tamil Nadu as the leading producing state (PIB factsheet, August 2026). Tamil Nadu supply can fill gaps in your local season or give you a steady second source.
This guide is for traders and mills outside Tamil Nadu buying a bulk lot for the first time. It covers what form of nut to order, how to arrange transport, what documents to keep, how to check the load and how payment works with a pickup-only supplier like Ramnad Agro in MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram district.
Why semi-husked (kudumi) nuts suit long trips
Coconuts sold in bulk come in two main forms. Fully husked nuts have all the fibre removed. Semi-husked nuts, called kudumi thengai in Tamil, keep a tuft or thin layer of husk over the top where the eyes are. That tuft matters on a long journey.
- Shell protection: the husk cushions the nut against knocks in a loaded lorry.
- Eyes covered: the soft eyes are where cracks, leaks and early spoilage often start; the tuft shields them.
- Lighter than whole nuts: most of the husk is gone, so you are not paying freight on the full husk.
Semi-husked nuts are also a common raw material for copra, the dried kernel used for oil. Our rule of thumb: for journeys longer than about two days, order semi-husked. For shorter trips, or if your mill cracks the nuts within a day or two of arrival, fully husked is often fine and gives more nuts per tonne. Our full comparison is in husked vs semi-husked coconut.
| Your situation | Suggested form | Suggested packing | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long trip, more than about two days | Semi-husked | Bags or loose | Tuft protects shell and eyes |
| Oil mill, cracking on arrival | Fully husked or semi-husked | Loose | Quick processing; easy tipping |
| Reselling to shops and traders | Semi-husked, Grade A | 50 kg bags | Looks good, easy to count and resell |
| Copra drying yard | Semi-husked or husked, milling grade | Loose | Kernel thickness matters more than size |
| Storing a few days before sale | Semi-husked | Bags | Better protection; easier stock rotation |
Choosing the grade
We sort mature nuts into Grade A, roughly 500 g and above, for traders, retail and cooking, and Grade B (milling), roughly 400 to 500 g, for oil mills and copra drying. Both are available fully husked or semi-husked (see the coconut specifications). Tell us your end use and we will suggest the grade. For more, see wholesale coconut grades for oil mills and how we sort a coconut load. To estimate nut counts for your lorry, use our nuts per kg and per tonne tables.
Arranging your own lorry or transport company
Ramnad Agro is a pickup-only supplier. We do not deliver and we do not book transport for you. You arrange the vehicle and pay the freight directly to the transporter. This keeps our rate clean and gives you full control over the vehicle, driver and timing. There are three common ways to do it:
1. Send your own vehicle
If you own a lorry or regularly hire one, send it with a driver you trust. You control the timing, and the driver can check the lot on your behalf.
2. Book a transport company or lorry agent
Most towns have transport companies and lorry booking agents who run trucks between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Karnataka or Andhra. Ask for a full-load (FTL) vehicle sized to your order. Confirm the freight, who pays tolls, the expected journey time and whether the driver will wait if loading takes longer. Get a lorry receipt (LR) from the transporter.
3. Use a return-trip lorry
Lorries that have delivered goods into southern Tamil Nadu often look for a return load. A transport agent can sometimes match you with one. Make sure the body is clean and dry before coconuts go in.
Things to tell your transporter
- Pickup point: our godown at MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram district (full address on the Delivery & Pickup page).
- Loading hours: 6 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week.
- Load: tonnage, bags or loose, husked or semi-husked.
- The vehicle will go over an electronic weighbridge empty and loaded.
- Check the vehicle's rated payload; do not plan to overload.
Tell us your state, grade, husked or semi-husked, bags or loose, tonnage (minimum 1,000 kg) and the date your lorry can reach MPK Valasai. We reply with today's ex-godown rate.
Documents to keep with every load
Paperwork protects you if anything is questioned on the road or at unloading. Keep copies with the driver and with you:
| Document | Who provides it | Why keep it |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier invoice | Ramnad Agro | Shows goods, quantity and buyer details |
| Weighbridge slip | Electronic weighbridge, handed to your driver | Empty and loaded weight; settles weight questions |
| Lorry receipt (LR) | Your transport company | Proof the transporter took the goods |
| Vehicle and driver papers | Vehicle owner / driver | Registration, permit and licence for road checks |
| E-way bill (if required) | Check with your accountant | Requirements depend on the movement and value |
| Payment records | Your bank | Advance and balance transfers for your books |
We do not give tax advice. The transporter and buyer should check e-way bill and invoice requirements with their accountant before the vehicle leaves.
Inspection at loading
The best time to check a coconut load is before it leaves our godown, not after it reaches yours. Either come yourself or brief your driver to do these checks:
- Look at the lot: nuts should be mature, without cracks, leaks or sprouts.
- Shake a few nuts: a mature nut sounds full of water.
- Check the form: semi-husked nuts should have the tuft over the eyes.
- Count a sample bag: weigh one bag and count the nuts to confirm the average size.
- Break a few nuts if you buy for milling, to see kernel thickness.
- Watch the weighbridge: make sure the empty and loaded weights are recorded and the slip is handed over.
- Take photos or a short video call before the lorry leaves, if you cannot be there.
Once you are happy with the lot, the balance is paid and loading goes ahead. Problems are far easier to fix at the godown than three states away.
Loading the lorry so the nuts arrive well
How the nuts sit in the lorry affects how they arrive. A few simple points help on long inter-state runs:
- Clean, dry body: wet floors and leftover cargo residue encourage mould. Ask the driver to sweep the body before arrival.
- Tarpaulin: carry a good tarpaulin to keep off rain and harsh sun, but leave some airflow so the load does not sweat.
- Bags or loose: bags are easier to count and unload by hand; loose loads pack tighter and suit mills that tip the load. Decide this when you order, so we pack to suit your vehicle.
- Unload promptly: nuts left sitting in a closed lorry for long after arrival lose quality. Plan unloading labour at your end before the lorry reaches you.
How payment works
- Confirm the order: grade, form, packing, tonnage and pickup date, at the quoted ex-godown rate.
- Pay 50% advance to book. We then prepare your lot, usually ready 48 to 72 hours after confirmation.
- Book your pickup slot through our pickup booking form.
- Vehicle arrives: it is weighed empty, and your driver or representative checks the lot.
- Pay the balance before loading. We pack and load free.
- Loaded weighment: the lorry is weighed again and the electronic weighbridge slip goes with your driver.
- Freight: you pay the transporter directly, as agreed with them.
Timing and season
Coconuts are available all year, but in our area most supply comes from February to July. If you are planning regular inter-state loads, those months usually give the widest choice of lots. Give us a few days' notice so your lot is ready when your lorry arrives, and remember that rates move; if you confirm late, ask for a fresh quote. Our guide to the coconut wholesale price in Tamil Nadu explains how to compare an ex-godown quote with a delivered price from a local supplier, once you add your freight.
A checklist before your first load
- Grade and form decided, based on journey length and end use.
- Transporter booked, freight agreed, vehicle payload checked.
- Accountant consulted on invoice and e-way bill requirements.
- Advance paid and pickup slot booked.
- Driver briefed on inspection, weighbridge and documents.
