The palmyra palm, panai maram in Tamil, is one of the most useful trees in south India. Its leaves, leaf-stalks and fibres become mats, brooms, rope, baskets and much more. This guide to palmyra products of Tamil Nadu explains what the tree gives, where the crafts come from, and what a bulk buyer should look for.
We are Ramnad Agro, a family wholesaler in MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram district, in one of the state’s palmyra belts. We are clear below about which products we supply and which belong to the wider regional tradition but are not ours.
The palmyra palm: Tamil Nadu’s state tree
The palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) is the state tree of Tamil Nadu. It is a tall fan palm, growing to about 20–30 metres, with a crown of roughly 40–50 large fan-shaped leaves, each 1.2–1.8 metres across.
Tamil Nadu has a very large share of India’s palmyra palms. A 2021 study of palm units in Thoothukudi estimated about 102 million palmyra palms in India, of which about 51.9 million are in Tamil Nadu, and described the state as the pioneer of India’s palm-product industry.
Where palmyra grows in Tamil Nadu
The palms are concentrated in the dry south: Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram, with Kanyakumari also known for palmyra fibre. They grow on dry, sandy land and along field boundaries where few other crops thrive, which is one reason palmyra fibre was historically called a cheap and easily available brush fibre.
Different places are known for different crafts. Manapad on the Thoothukudi coast is known for palm-leaf boxes, bags, baskets and mats, and Chettinad for its square-weave palm baskets. Ramanathapuram’s villages weave mats and make brooms and rope.
Palmyra product families
It helps to group palmyra products by the part of the tree they come from.
| Part of the palm | Typical products | Supplied by Ramnad Agro? |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf (olai) | Sleeping and sitting mats, baskets, boxes, fans, thatch, fences | Mats only |
| Leaf ribs and stalk | Stiff brooms (panai eeki) | Yes |
| Fibre (naar) | Rope, brushes, cots | Rope only |
| Fruit and sap | Food products such as palm jaggery | No |
Leaf products
The leaf is the most familiar raw material. It is cut, sun-dried and split into strips, then woven or folded. Traditional leaf products include mats, baskets, boxes, umbrellas, fans, thatch and fences, and in earlier times palm-leaf manuscripts. Of these, the panai olai paai (பனை ஓலை பாய்) is the everyday staple, traditionally valued for staying cool in hot weather.
Fibre products
Palmyra fibre is taken from the base of the leaf-stalk. It is commonly graded as hard (heavy-duty brushes), medium (household cleaning brushes) and soft (yarn). Extraction has long been a village cottage industry and is mostly done by hand. Rope (panai naar kayiru), brushes and woven cots (panai naar kattil) are the main fibre products.
Stalk and rib products
Thick, stiff palmyra ribs make heavy-duty brooms for yards, roads, mills and wet floors. They are thicker and stiffer than coconut leaf ribs; see our coconut vs palmyra brooms comparison.
Food products
The palm also yields food products such as palm jaggery and nungu (ice apple). These are part of the region’s tradition but outside our trade.
What Ramnad Agro supplies (and what we don’t)
We are a wholesaler of three palmyra products, all sourced from families around MPK Valasai:
- Palm leaf mats: handwoven from sun-dried palmyra leaf, no plastic or chemical dyes. Approx. 6×3 ft (sleeping) and 4×2 ft (sitting / pooja), custom sizes on request. Bundles of 25; minimum order 50 mats.
- Palmyra brooms: approx. 85–105 cm long, about 500–750 g each, bundles of 10; minimum order 100 bundles.
- Palmyra fibre rope: 2-ply (approx. 6–10 mm) and 3-ply (approx. 10–14 mm), in 25 or 50 kg coils; minimum order 100 kg. Not for lifting or safety use.
We also supply coconut leaf brooms and mature coconuts. We do not make or sell palm-leaf baskets, boxes, fans, decorative crafts, palmyra cots or palmyra food products. If you need those, look for specialist craft groups in the areas mentioned above. All our lines are on the products page.
A sustainable raw material
Palmyra leaf crafts do not need the tree to be cut down. Leaves are cut from living palms, which keep producing new ones, and the palms grow on land that often supports little else. The finished products are plant-based: mats, brooms and rope break down naturally at the end of their life rather than leaving plastic behind.
For buyers selling to eco-conscious customers, that is an honest, simple story: a natural product from a traditional tree, made by hand in Tamil Nadu villages.
What to check when buying palmyra products in bulk
- Material: confirm it is palmyra, not coconut leaf, korai grass or a synthetic look-alike.
- Dryness: leaf and fibre products must be fully dry; a damp smell means mould risk.
- Finish: even weave and firm edges on mats; tight binding on brooms; even twist on rope.
- Size and weight: agree approximate dimensions and accept that handmade items vary slightly.
- Sample first: we courier samples at cost before a bulk order.
- Packing and freight: ask how goods are bundled and who pays freight to your city.
