Search for coconut broom manufacturers in Tamil Nadu and you will find hundreds of directory listings from Chennai, Pollachi, Salem, Tiruppur and smaller towns. Many look identical: a stock photo, “price on request” and a phone number. This guide explains how to tell a reliable coconut broom supplier from a listing that will waste your time.
We are Ramnad Agro, a family wholesale business in MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram district, supplying coconut leaf brooms (thenna eeki) since 1998. The checks below are the same ones we use when we buy from grove families.
Where coconut broom sticks come from in Tamil Nadu
A coconut broom, called thenna eeki, eerkuchi or தென்னை விளக்குமாறு, is made from the thin midrib of each coconut leaflet. Wherever coconut is grown, fronds are cut regularly, so raw material is available all year.
Most of the work happens in villages. Families strip the leaflets, sun-dry the midribs and tie them. Traders and wholesalers then collect, check and pack the brooms. So a “manufacturer” may be a family unit, an aggregator or a trader. What matters is whether they control quality before the bundles leave. Read how coconut leaf brooms are made for the full process.
Quality checks before you choose a coconut broom supplier
| Check | What good looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Dryness | Sticks are dry and springy, no smell | Damp or musty smell, dark spots |
| Leaf waste | Leafy bits trimmed off | Leaf strips left on to add weight |
| Length | Uniform within a bundle | Short sticks hidden in the middle |
| Thickness | Even, with few broken tips | Mix of very thin and very thick |
| Binding | Firm; no shedding when shaken | Sticks pull out by hand |
| Weight | Average matches the quote | Lighter than promised |
Ask every supplier the same questions: length in cm, average weight per broom, bundle size, binding and handle. If they cannot answer in numbers, they probably do not check.
Always take a sample before bulk
A photo shows shape, not weight. A sample shows you the real broom your customers will hold. Weigh it, measure it, shake it, and sweep with it for a few days.
We send a sample bundle of 5 coconut brooms by courier at cost. Compare it with other suppliers’ samples on the same table, by weight and finish, before you compare prices. Our price per kg vs per piece guide shows how to convert quotes.
Payment, invoicing and paperwork
A reliable supplier explains terms clearly before you pay anything.
- Payment terms in writing. Ours are 50% advance to book, balance before dispatch against the transport receipt (bilty / LR copy). You see the goods are booked with a transporter before you pay the balance.
- Proper invoice. Ask what invoice and GST details the supplier will provide, and confirm the correct HSN code and tax rate with your own accountant.
- A real address. Our loading point is our godown at 8/784, MPK Valasai, Ramanathapuram – 623523.
Packing and transit
Coconut brooms are light but bulky, so packing decides how many fit on a lorry and how they arrive.
- Ask the bundle size. We pack in bundles of 10 or 25.
- Ask how bundles are stacked and how many fit on a lorry to your city.
- Ask whether they use lorry or parcel service, and who books it. We arrange either, across India.
- Ask the dispatch time. Ours is 3–5 working days for lorry loads.
On arrival, count the bundles against the bilty, weigh a few to check the average, and store them dry and off the floor.
Red flags in coconut broom directory listings
- The same stock photo appears under several company names.
- No length, weight or stick count, only “best quality”.
- A price far below everyone else with no weight stated.
- Full payment demanded before anything is booked.
- No sample offered, even at your cost.
- Claims of “manufacturer and exporter” with no address you can check.
None of these prove a seller is bad, but each is a reason to ask more questions.
Questions to ask on the first call
A five-minute call tells you a lot. Note the answers and compare suppliers side by side.
- Do you tie the brooms yourselves, or buy them finished? Who checks them before packing?
- What is the average weight per broom, and how do you check it?
- What length do you supply, and can you make heavier brooms or other sizes?
- What is your minimum order, and how long from advance to dispatch?
- Which transporter do you use to my city, and will I get the bilty / LR copy?
- What happens if the count or weight on arrival does not match?
A supplier who answers clearly, in numbers, and does not rush you into paying is usually the one worth a trial order. Start with a sample, then a minimum order, and build up from there once the first lot sells well.
Coconut and palmyra brooms from one supplier
Many shops sell both soft and hard brooms. Coconut brooms suit everyday indoor sweeping; palmyra brooms (panai eeki) suit yards, mills and rough outdoor floors. Buying both from one supplier can mean one lorry and one set of paperwork. See our coconut vs palmyra broom comparison.
